Choosing the Best Boxing Gear
Boxing is quickly becoming some of the most popular work-outs as well as a growing competitive sport. Like most martial arts, western boxing is a relatively inexpensive sport to get started with basic boxing gear. For beginners you will not need a lot of boxing gear and it should last you a long time as long as you buy quality equipment.
GUIDE GEAR
You will not need high-tech boxing gear to get started. All you really need is some basic boxing gear and steady, focused training. Used equipment is sometimes available if you know where to look but used boxing gear can be dangerous as a poor buy but more so as overly worn and no longer protective with no padding left. Many boxing gyms keep old equipment for students who have none which typically has no padding left and in the long run you will want to invest in your own also to avoid the smelly funk of public mitts.

- Punching bag and mount fixture
- Optional: boxing shoes
For sparring, also bring:
- Headgear
- Mouthguard
- 16oz boxing gloves
- Athletic cup and supporter
Hand Wraps - Boxing hand wraps are important in keeping the skin on your knuckles from getting cut and can also prevent bone fractures and wrist sprains. The best way to do that is by learning how to wrap your hands which provides protection for those bones like your knuckles. Start by looping it around your thumb and cover your knuckle and each individual finger.
Boxing bag gloves are much thinner than sparring gloves making them lighter. They typically have just the right amount of padding to protect you when hitting the bag but are not made to block punches in sparring. TKO makes some excellent bag gloves which will last for years. If you are a hard-hitter and training consistently I recommend the TKO Pro-Style bag gloves but if you are just starting out then basic
TKO neoprene bag gloves should be fine.
Punching Bag Types - There are many boxing punching bag types but the most common is the heavy bag and you will find 75lbs is the most universal with a cover made of vinyl, leather, or canvas. There are mounts to attach them to the floor, ceiling, wall or free-standing apparatus.
Most people find a vinyl heavy bag to be the most comfortable to hit while a canvas heavy bag is often thought to be the most durable especially if the bag is hanging outside or in a garage where it can be weathered. A longer muay thai bag is needed if you want to add kicks to your workout.
Shoes
You do not need boxing shoes to start with and if you are just training at home or at a gym tennis shoes are fine. Many martial arts or kick boxing gyms will not allow shoes on the mat though. Additionally, boxing shoes have a smooth sole which helps in ring movement.
Headgear Boxing - headgear is important in preventing concussions and long-term injury. It will also keep you from getting black eyes and small cuts on your face. If you are sparring more than 20% then boxing headgear is just as important and boxing gloves.

Prevent dental injury as well as significantly reduce concussions with a quality mouth guard. Sparring/Boxing Gloves - The core of your boxing gear, quality boxing gloves should be comfortable and durable giving you protection from injury. Be sure get get gloves that fit properly and have a secure Velcro closure. 16oz is the standard size but that is likely too big for women, kids or if you are looking to focus on speed.
